Flume Compiles Unreleased Material Into Electric Mixtape ‘Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan’
It hasn’t been long since Flume took his social media audience on a journey into the discovery and reparation of his old laptop, a unique process that resulted in “Slugger 1.4 [2014 Export.WAV],” an old yet explosive instrumental that somehow found its way to streaming services eight years later.
In the full ten years since his monumental, self-titled debut, Flume has created dozens upon dozen of auditory gems that never saw the light of day. Now, the Australian producer has decided to compile a number of these unreleased tracks from the vault, and abruptly release them in “Slugger 1.4” fashion by way of a surprise mixtape: Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan.
Spanning 10 tracks in length, Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan is out now via Future Classic and features mostly unheard-of material, created from 2012, while Flume was working on his iconic debut project, till 2021, when he was presumably crafting his latest album, Palaces.
A number of guests appear on the record too, notably Isabella Manfredi on “Rhinestone,” which was included in Flume’s When Everything Was New documentary back in 2019 but was never officially released. Alternative musician Panda Bear also makes an appearance on “One Step Closer 1.4,” a laid-back cut from 2021, while Injury Reserve land on the opener “Counting Sheep (V2),” which dates back to 2018.
“It’s been ten years since my first record came out, since then I’ve wrote a lot a lot music and not all of it has seen the light of day. After seeing the reaction to Slugger 1.4 and how much love it got, I figured it would be fun to release more of these forgotten ideas I from my old laptops. The whole process has been quite cathartic,” explained Flume in a social media post.
In celebration of 10 years since his debut album was released, Flume just announced a colossal show at LA’s Kia Forum on May 5th, bringing alongside him previous collaborators Chet Faker and Kučka, as well as a number of special guests.
