Medasin Unearths A New Musical Self In Transformative Third Album, ‘Always In A Hurry’
It’s a truly exciting time for Medasin, as he finally steps back into the limelight with his third album, Always In A Hurry.
To say that the pioneering producer and instrumentalist hasn’t seen his fair share of success over the past years would be an understatement. Due to his forward-thinking sound, he was enlisted to create viral remixes for the likes of Kučka, Portugal. The Man and Joji, as well as collaborated with some of electronic music’s brightest talents, among them X&G, josh pan, k?d and Ekali. Within the span of a few years, Medasin transitioned from SoundCloud acclaim to the big stages, worked with a number of talented producers to craft his iconic Microdose sample pack series on Splice, and cemented himself as one of electronic music’s most eclectic budding names.
Following his sophomore album RIPPLS, which was released independently back in 2020 and marked the pinnacle of his dazzling and highly-textured sound, Medasin took a step back and embarked on a reflective musical journey throughout the past three years. Occasionally letting his audience take a peek into his newfound process, Medasin spent the past years redefining his creativity and artistic expression, and the result is beyond stunning.
Medasin’s Always In A Hurry is a transformative and emotive piece of work. Spanning 10 tracks in length, it comes from "a period of true creative mania,” as the artist explained in a candid social media post, and explores a wide range of fresh ideas, soundscapes and tempos.
The self-titled opener, which recently sold out on sound.xyz for a total of 6.9 ETH, makes for a mesmerizing introduction to the album. Wild acoustic drum rhythms kick off the tune, serving as a surprise to anyone who hasn’t been aware of the change in tone of Medasin’s music throughout the past years. As a barrage of synths and a soothing string section follow, the sonic universe of Always In A Hurry is perfectly laid out.
There is so much more to discover within the tracklist on top of the chaotic “Star Song” and the intimate “I Feel Strange,” that preceded the full record as singles. “Stretch” and “Up and Down” are as playful as they are intricate, while “Hymn,” “Elevator Music” and “Open Up” conclude the project on a pensive yet hopeful note.
Almost exclusively lacking in vocals, Always In A Hurry feels like a transformative, almost spiritual experience. From its exciting and unpredictable drum rhythms and highly organic instrumentation to the soft synth lines and immersive ambiances, it nicely connects with Medasin’s old identity while feeling like a natural step toward the future.
“I had so much fun working on these songs and pushing myself to places I hadn’t been yet with music,” revealed Medasin in a social media post. “I feel like I mined deep inside my soul to find nuggets of emotion that I hadn’t found before. I did my best to bring as much resolution to these ideas as I could so we could enjoy them together. It was a privilege to work with so many insane musicians that are way more talented than me, who helped me bring this thing to life and helped me execute on my ideas at a level I had not yet gotten to reach.”
