Rising Sugar-Pop Artist Asukal Goes Dark In Her New Single “Midnight”

With a name that directly translates to “sugar” from Tagalog, Asukal has gained considerable momentum in the electro-pop sphere for her cheeky, bubblegum bops. Although she is well know for her gorgeous, ethereal vocals, Asukal’s production on her tracks is what really brings her music to life, with experimental, stripped back beats that have a distinct candy-pop feel. Dusting off some of her normal sugar-sweet coating, Asukal enters darker territory with her hauntingly beautiful new single “Midnight”, which is centered around the confusion and apprehension that builds when facing issues outside one’s control. Asukal expresses the concept behind the song on her Instagram writing, “I wrote this song last year about anxiety that comes w doing the most while feeling like ur not doing enough + being kind to urself in the process of taking care of your mental health.”

The single was accompanied with a video that is equally as breathtaking as the song itself. With helmeted dirt bikers whizing around Asukal, the video certainly is reminiscent of Grimes’ almost decade old video “Oblivion”- a track and video that, like Asukal, was a means for Grimes to conceptualize the anxiety she faced from painful life experiences. The video’s juxtaposition of Asukal running in ominous night scenes with the shots of anxiety inducing racing from the dirt bikers is the perfect setting for the message and tone that “Midnight” brings.
