Spotlighting Our Favorite Producers On Vince Staples' Self-Titled Project

On July 9, 2021, Vince Staples released his self-titled fourth studio album. According to a statement he gave to Pitchfork, Vince’s goal with this album was to further open up about his life story. He’s had similar themes on other projects, but with Vince Staples his self-assessment takes a renewed look at life as the dark impressions from his past mingle with his growing maturity and ongoing success. However, this is a very specific type of feeling that Vince brings out in this album, and, while the importance of his voice in lyrics are undeniable, the producers behind the beats deserve a lot of credit as well.

Kenny Beats
Executive Producer

The ten track project features a number of producers, but undoubtedly the biggest role was played by Vince Staples’ executive producer Kenny Beats. As executive producer, Kenny had a say on every song, ultimately helping curate the album’s vibe. As it stands, Kenny’s solid spot in production is unique, as he has proven his ability to reach out and engage with his fanbase on Twitch and on YouTube through his popular series The Cave, in addition to churning out hits for both major and up and coming artists.

Xavi
Production credits on “SUNDOWN TOWN”

Xavi continues to establish himself in the producer scene with yet another major placement working on track number 3, “SUNDOWN TOWN.” The song’s warped and muffled vocal sample creates an eerie atmosphere when combined with the crisp drum selection. Xavi has previously worked with Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Demi Lovato, NLE Choppa, and more. We’re betting he can only go up from here.

Monte Booker
Production credits on “TAKING TRIPS”

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Monte Booker’s credited on track number 5 “TAKING TRIPS.” Booker not only has his solo act, but often works alongside rapper Smino, both of whom have ties with Kenny Beats. Other artists he’s worked with include Noname, Ravyn Lenae, Dreamville, Spillage Village, and more. Booker and Smino run Chicago based artist collective Zero Fatigue, and he is also a member of Soulection.

Nils
Production credits on “MHM”

Nils, whose real name is Nils Nöhden, is a multi-platinum producer originally from Hamburg, Germany. Credited on song 10, “MHM,” he has established himself as one of the best producers in the industry, working alongside Juice WRLD, Young Thug, Roddy Ricch, Gucci Mane, DaBaby, Trippie Redd, Kodak Black, and more. As someone having to penetrate the American market from overseas, there is no doubt that he is both an extremely consistent producer with a very tenacious mindset.
