Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in anti-Asian hate and attacks against Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders. Because of COVID-19’s origin in China, a toxic mindset began to grow in the West, in which the general Asian population is believed to be wholly responsible for the virus. As we barricaded at home under strict quarantine regulations, hate crimes decreased on average by 7% when comparing 2020 to 2019. Although there was an average decrease in hate crimes, anti-Asian hate crimes experienced the opposite effect last year, increasing by a staggering 150%.

Los Angeles and New York City had the majority of the AAPI hate crimes, collectively accounting for around 35% of the incidents. Although LA and NYC had the most reports, Cleveland (200%), Philadelphia (200%), and San Jose (150%) all had huge increases in AAPI hate crimes when comparing 2020 to 2019.

On March 16, three massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia were targeted in a series of shootings during a single hour, leaving eight people dead, including six Asian women.

Growing up in a conservative Baptist church, the shooter became obsessed with lust and guilt as he struggled to curb his sexual desires. Having blocked porn websites from his computer, he switched to a flip phone to further restrict his porn access, and checked himself into a rehab clinic for a self-diagnosed sexual addiction. The shooter progressed into a religious mania that led him to target and murder women in three massage parlors, all of which he had visited previously for sex.
The gunman who was quickly apprehended by officials has now been charged with eight counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault. He recently told investigators that he targeted these parlors because they were a “temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.”

Many Asian American women have vocalized that racism they face is inextricably linked with sexism. Of the 3,800 anti-Asian attacks reported in 2020, 68% were by women.
